Install managed Google Play app

When you add a managed Google Play app to Sophos Mobile, users can install it from their managed Play Store app. As an administrator, you can install the app from Sophos Mobile.

Note

You can’t update apps from Sophos Mobile. Users must do this in Google Play.

Install app on selected devices

To install a managed Google Play app from Sophos Mobile on selected devices:

  1. On the menu sidebar, click Apps > Android.
  2. On the Apps - Android Enterprise page, click the arrow next to the app you want to install and then click Install.
  3. Do one of the following to select the devices on which to install the app:

    • Select individual devices.
    • Click Select device groups and then select one or more device groups.
  4. Click Finish.

Sophos Mobile sends a request to a Google server. Google then installs the app on the device.

To check the installation status for a device, go to Show device > Installed apps. See Apps pending installation.

Allow users to remove apps

By default, users aren’t allowed to remove a managed Google Play app that you installed from Sophos Mobile. Though they can uninstall the app, Google immediately re-installs it.

To allow users to remove managed Google Play apps permanently:

  1. In the Restrictions policy configuration that you assigned to the device or work profile, select Allow app uninstall.

See Restrictions configuration (Android Enterprise device policy) and Restrictions configuration (Android Enterprise work profile policy).

For general information on how to assign policies to devices, see Assign a policy.

Troubleshooting

The installation task doesn’t appear in Google Play.

If an installation task remains in the status Installation request to be sent to Google for a long time, check that the app is available for the user’s country and device type.

The app isn’t installed.

If an installation task remains in the status Installation request sent to Google for a long time, open Google Play on the device and check the Pending downloads page for an installation task that stopped responding. Your installation task will only start after all tasks above it in the list are completed.
