Managed configuration

Some managed Google Play apps offer a managed configuration, which lets you configure custom settings for the app. These apps have a note “This app offers managed configuration” in managed Google Play.

For example, the following image shows the note for the Microsoft Outlook app:

The "This app offers managed configuration" note in Managed Google Play.

Note

If you entered managed configurations before August 13, 2022, see Migrate managed configurations.

Edit managed configuration

To edit the managed configuration of an app:

  1. On the menu sidebar, click Apps > Android.
  2. Click the app for which you want to configure managed configuration settings.
  3. On the Edit approved app page, select Use managed configuration.
  4. Click Edit managed configuration.

This opens a window with the managed configuration settings that the app offers.

  5. Configure the settings as required.

For information on available settings, see the app documentation.

    Tip

You can use the $USERNAME and $EMAILADDRESS placeholders in text fields. Sophos Mobile replaces these with the actual username and email address when assigning the settings to a device. On user-less devices, the placeholders are replaced with an empty string.

  6. Click Save in the Managed configuration window.

The **Save** button on the **Managed configuration** window.

  7. Click Save on the Edit approved app page.

The **Save** button on the **Edit approved app** page.

Sophos Mobile sends the managed configuration via a Google API to all devices that have the app installed. It might take a few minutes before the settings are available on the devices.

Remove managed configuration from devices

To remove a managed configuration from devices:

  1. On the Edit approved app page, clear Use managed configuration.

The **Use managed configuration** setting on the **Edit approved app** page.

  2. Click Save.

The **Save** button on the **Edit approved app** page.

Sophos Mobile sends the update via a Google API to all devices that have the app installed. It might take a few minutes before the settings are removed from the devices.

Migrate managed configurations

Read the following if you edited a managed configuration before August 13, 2022.

On August 13, 2022, Sophos Mobile switched to a different Google API for managed configurations because Google no longer supports the old API.

Your managed configurations remain active, even for devices receiving them after August 13, 2022. You must re-enter a managed configuration in the following situations:

  • You want to edit the managed configuration.
  • You want to install an app update that has managed configuration changes.

Sophos Mobile can’t automatically convert your managed configuration to the new format. However, you can see your existing settings when you expand the Managed configuration section on the Edit approved app page.

Copy the settings from the Managed configuration section and enter them in the Managed configuration window as described in Edit managed configuration above.
