Find device

You can find a device and view its location in Google Maps.

Restriction

You can’t find the following devices:

  • Apple User Enrollment devices
  • Macs

Note

For privacy reasons, all events related to device location are recorded and can be inspected later. You can turn off viewing device locations in the Sophos Mobile privacy settings. See Configure privacy settings.

Requirements

  • Sophos Mobile Control is running.
  • Location services are turned on.
  • Sophos Mobile Control has the Location permission.

Use the Locate permission required compliance rule to ensure that Sophos Mobile Control can get the device’s location.

Use the App is able to locate compliance rule to ensure that Sophos Mobile Control can get the device’s location.

These prerequisites aren’t required for devices in Managed Lost Mode.

  • The Sophos Chrome Security extension is active.

  • Finding the device is allowed.

    To allow finding the device, do as follows:

    • Chrome Enterprise devices: In the Google Admin console, go to Devices > Chrome > Settings > User & browser settings > Geolocation and select Allow sites to detect users' geolocation.
    • Other Chromebooks: On the device, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Location and select Sites can ask for your location.

If no user is signed in to the device, the Locate task remains in Notified status until a user signs in.

Find device

To find a device:

  1. On the menu sidebar, click Devices.
  2. Select the device you want to find.

  3. Select Actions > Find.

    If Find is not available, check that the Sophos Mobile Control app can get the device’s location.

  4. Enter a reason for the request and then select Yes.

    A task to get the device location is created and transferred to the device.

    If the device is offline, the task remains in Notified status until the device connects with the server.

  5. When the task is completed, select Actions > Find > Show location to view the device location in Google Maps.

To view the location of several devices, select them on the Devices page and then select Actions > Find. Alternatively, use the Device location report.

You can’t track the device location over time because Sophos Mobile only stores the last known location.
