Proxy configuration

You can configure your managed devices to connect to Sophos Central or download Sophos updates through a proxy server.

This page tells you how to configure proxy settings in Sophos Central.

Alternatively, you can configure the proxy settings on the devices. See Configure devices to use proxy server settings.

Configure the proxy

These steps enable both computers and servers to use the proxy server.

  1. Click the General Settings icon General Settings icon..
  2. Under General, click Proxy Configuration.

    Proxy configuration page.

  3. Turn on Proxy Configuration.

  4. Enter the proxy settings as follows:

    1. Enter the Hostname. For example, proxy.example.net.
    2. Enter the Port. For example, 8080.
    3. Enter the Username and Password for the proxy.

    Note

For security reasons, we can't recover the password. When you click Save, you may overwrite an existing password.

  5. Click Save.

PAC URL Configuration

A Proxy Auto-Configuration (PAC) file is a small JavaScript file that contains the information endpoints and servers need to automatically configure proxy settings. If you use a PAC for proxy configuration, enter its URL in the PAC Url field. Here's an example:

http://your.organization.com/pacfile.pac

Click Save to save your changes.

How devices connect

Windows, Mac, and Linux devices now connect to the internet using the first working configuration they find.

The order in which they try to connect is as follows:

  1. Use a Sophos Central message relay.
  2. Use the proxy configured here.
  3. Use the default system proxy.
  4. Use Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) to automatically discover a proxy.

    Note

WPAD isn't supported for Linux devices.

  5. Connect without using a proxy.
