Access Point Details

You can view information about your access points' configuration and performance. You can also restart and manage the settings of your access points.

Settings

On the Settings tab, you can view the access point's configuration. You can see the following information below the name of the access point.

  • Location: The country code of your access point's location.
  • MAC: The MAC address of the access point.
  • S/N: The serial number of the access point. Click Copy to clipboard. to copy the serial number to the clipboard.
  • Firmware Version: The firmware version of the access point.
  • Uptime: The uptime of the access point.
  • Internal IP: The internal IP address configured on the access point.
  • External IP: The external IP address Sophos Central uses to communicate with the access point.
  • Model: The model of the access point.

You can also see the following details.

  • Workload: This shows the connected device load on an access point. Status is shown for the following categories:

    • Tx Rate: Transmitted data rate in Mbps. The status is always green.
    • Rx Rate: Received data rate in Mbps. The status is always green.
    • Cpu Usage: Percentage of CPU used. Green is below 50%, yellow is 51% to 80%, and red is 81% or more.
    • Memory Usage: Percentage of memory used. Green is below 60%, yellow is 61% to 80%, and red is 81% or more.
  • Site address: You can see the site address if your access point belongs to a site. Click the link below the site address to go to the details page for that site.

  • Control Panel: Click Reboot Access Point to restart your access point with the current configuration.

General

You can configure the following general settings:

  • Name: You can change the access point's name. The default name is the access point's serial number.
  • Comment: You can add information to help identify your access point.
  • Airtime Fairness: Access points distribute transmission airtime equally to all devices according to their traffic needs. We recommend that you turn on this option if you have several devices connected to your network or if you offer public wireless. Turning off this option can improve performance.
  • Upgrade automatically: AP6 series access points can automatically upgrade their firmware when a new version is available. You can turn this off if you want to manually upgrade the firmware.

VLAN configuration (AP6 series only)

You can change the management VLAN. Enter a value for the management VLAN in the Management VLAN ID field. Must be between 1-4095. Default is VLAN 1.

Note

We don't recommend changing the management VLAN in Sophos Central. This may cause the access point to lose connectivity with Sophos Central until the connected network is reconfigured to support the new VLAN traffic.

You can set the VLAN tagging for the LAN ports. Select Tagged, Untagged(default), or Exclude from the drop-down menu.

Radio configuration

Depending on the access point, 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz are available. You can configure each band separately. For AP15 and APX 320 models, you can also configure the 5 GHz band settings from the 2.4 GHz band.

TX Power

Controls the power of outbound transmissions from the router to the antenna. Adjusting the power can help with coverage and data rate. Reducing the power means reducing the operating distance, which can improve connection speed and security. For example, to minimize the interference, you need to reduce the power. This reduces the operating distance and interference. Default: 100 %.

Channel width

The smaller the channel width, the more individual channels are available. More channels allow more data to be transmitted, resulting in faster wireless speed. A larger channel width may cause too much interference if there are many neighboring wireless networks.

Autochannel

When turned on, this will automatically select the least used channel for transmission. You can manually select the channel by turning off Autochannel and selecting your desired channel from the drop-down menu.

Note

For APX 320, both radios must be on 5 GHz for all channels to be available.

Dynamic Background Channel Selection (APX series)

When turned on, the access point regularly changes the channel to optimize the network.

Note

We recommend turning this off on access points that are part of a mesh network.

MU-MIMO Support

Enable multi-user, multiple-input, multiple-output (MU-MIMO) technology to establish communication between multiple devices simultaneously. For devices that don't support MU-MIMO, MIMO feature is available. Also, if you turn off MU-MIMO, the MIMO feature is restored.

Assigned SSIDs

You can see the SSIDs assigned to the access point and the frequency bands they operate on. You can assign SSIDs to make separate SSIDs accessible in different parts of your building. For example, a corporate SSID available in your offices, and a guest SSID available in the public parts of your building.

Assign an SSID to an access point

To assign an SSID to an access point, do as follows:

  1. Connect an ethernet cable to the access point.
  2. Click Assign SSID.
  3. Select your mesh SSID and click Assign.
  4. Click Save.

Tip

You can also add an access point to a network when you create an SSID.

Remove an SSID from an access point

To remove an SSID from an access point, do as follows:

  1. Connect an ethernet cable to the access point.
  2. Click the delete button Delete button. next to the SSID you want to remove.
  3. Click Save.

Task queue (AP6 series)

The Task queue tab shows all tasks sent from Sophos Central to the selected access point. This can help when troubleshooting. The tasks are displayed on the following tabs:

  • Total tasks
  • Created
  • Pending
  • In progress
  • Failed
  • Success

You can see the detailed payload of any task by clicking on the entry in the Entity column for that task.

Devices

The Devices tab shows a graph of the devices connected to the access point and devices with poor signal quality over the selected period. It also shows information about the devices connected to the access point. See Devices.
