Find device

You can find a device managed by Sophos Mobile and view its location in Google Maps.

Restriction

You can't find the following devices:

  • Apple User Enrollment devices
  • Macs

Note

For privacy reasons, Sophos Mobile logs all events related to device location. You can turn off viewing device locations in the Sophos Mobile privacy settings. See Configure privacy settings.

Note

For privacy reasons, you can't track the device location over time. Sophos Mobile only stores the last known location.

Requirements

You can only find devices that comply with the requirements listed in the following sections.

Android devices

  • Sophos Mobile Control is running.
  • Location services are turned on.
  • Sophos Mobile Control has the Location permission.

Use the Locate permission required compliance rule to ensure that Sophos Mobile Control can get the device's location.

iPhones and iPads

  • Sophos Mobile Control is running.
  • Location services are turned on.
  • Sophos Mobile Control has the Location permission.

Use the App is able to locate compliance rule to ensure that Sophos Mobile Control can get the device's location.

These requirements don't apply to devices in Managed Lost Mode.

Chromebooks

  • The Sophos Chrome Security extension is active.
  • Finding the device is allowed.

    To allow finding the device, do as follows:

    • Chrome Enterprise devices: In the Google Admin console, go to Devices > Chrome > Settings > User & browser settings > Geolocation and select Allow sites to detect users' geolocation.
    • Other Chromebooks: On the device, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Location and select Sites can ask for your location.

If no user has signed in to the device, the Locate task remains in Notified status until a user signs in.

Find device

To find a device, do as follows:

  1. Go to Devices > Mobile devices and click the name of the device you want to find.
  2. On the device's details page, click Actions > Find.

    If Find isn't available, check that the Sophos Mobile Control app can get the device's location.

  3. Enter a reason for the request and then click OK.

  4. Sophos Mobile sends a task to the device to get its location.

    If the device is offline, the task remains in Notified status until the device synchronizes with Sophos Mobile.

    To see the task status, click Open in Sophos Mobile and go to the Tasks tab.

  5. When the task is completed, click Show location in the top right of the device's details page to view the device location in Google Maps.

Getting the device's most accurate location can take up to 10 minutes. The device might be offline or powered off if we can't get its location after 10 minutes.
