Install Sophos agent on Windows or macOS

Install the Sophos agent on your Windows computers, Windows servers, or Macs.

Sophos agent

The steps depend on whether you're an existing customer (you have our endpoint protection already) or a new customer.

For any devices that are already running Sophos software, do as follows:

  1. In Sophos Central, go to Devices > Computers and servers.

  2. Select the devices and click Manage software.

  3. In Manage device software, under Agent mode, select XDR.

  4. Click Save.

If you have any devices not managed by Sophos Central yet, go to Devices > Installers, download installers, and run them on the devices.

If your devices aren't running Sophos software yet, do as follows:

  1. In Sophos Central, go to Devices > Installers.

    Installers page.

  2. Under Endpoint, download the Windows and macOS installers for your endpoint computers.

  3. If you have Windows servers, under Server, download the Windows Server installer.
  4. Run the installers on your devices.

On the Installers page, click How do I use the installers for endpoints and servers? for advice.

These installers install the Sophos agent automatically, along with any other Sophos components you need.

XDR Sensor

XDR Sensor doesn't protect against threats. You must have third-party protection installed. The XDR Sensor is only available with an MDR Essentials license.

If you want us to monitor devices that are using third-party protection, you must install XDR Sensor.

You can install XDR Sensor from Sophos Central or from the command line.

You can download the installer from Sophos Central and run it on your devices.

To install XDR Sensor, do as follows:

  1. In Sophos Central, go to Devices > Installers.

  2. Under XDR Sensor installers, click the installer for your operating system.

    Restriction

    You can only install XDR Sensor on Macs running macOS 11 Big Sur or later.

  3. Go to the Downloads folder to get the installer.

  4. Run the installer on your devices.

You can run the installer using the command line.

To install XDR Sensor, do as follows:

  1. Run the installer from a command prompt on the devices and specify mdr as the product you want to install.

    • On Windows devices, run the following command:
        SophosSetup.exe --products=mdr
    • On Macs, run the following command:
        sudo ./Sophos\ Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Sophos\ Installer --products mdr

Change product deployments

You can switch devices between XDR Sensor and Sophos protection or remove any current protection.

To change your product deployments, do as follows:

  1. In Sophos Central, go to Devices > Computers and servers.
  2. Select devices and click Manage Software.

  3. In Manage Device software, under Agent mode, select the product you want to change to.

    Change deployment.

  4. Click Save.
