Open a password-protected document file
To open a password-protected document file, do as follows:
- Open the email you've received.
- Download the password-protected document file.

Open the password-protected document file.
Your document viewer opens, and a password prompt appears.

Enter your password.
You can now read the message.
Note
The password for an encrypted document file is permanent. For example, to open a document that was encrypted on October 12, 2018, you must enter the password you were using on that date.

View attachments
Some attachments, such as PDF files, ZIP files, or MS Office XML files, that you receive can only be opened using third-party software. For industry-standard formats that require third-party software with built-in encryption, we recommend the following tools:
- Use a standard PDF reader to open
[filename].pdf. We recommend Adobe Acrobat. - Use a standard ZIP client to open
[filename].zip. We recommend 7-Zip or WinZip. -
Use the appropriate Microsoft Office program to open any attachments with one of the following file extensions:
- Word: .docx, .dotx, .docm, .docb
- Excel: .xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .xltm, .xlsb
- PowerPoint: .pptx, .pptm, .potx, .potm, .ppsx, .ppsm
Open encrypted PDF attachments
Attachments can be stored within encrypted PDF files. We recommend using Adobe Acrobat to open encrypted attachments such as [ENCRYPTED] message.pdf or [ENCRYPTED] attachments.pdf. The steps for opening PDF attachments depend on the device you use.
Warning
Some PDF readers might not show encrypted PDF attachments.
Open attachments on a computer
To open an encrypted PDF with attachments using Adobe Acrobat on a computer, do as follows:
- Download the PDF attached to your email and open it. You're prompted to enter a password.

Enter your password. The PDF opens, and any embedded attachments appear in the Attachments pane.
Note
If the Attachments pane doesn't open automatically, open it from the View menu.

In the Attachments pane, do one of the following:
- Double-click an attachment to open it.
- Right-click an attachment to open or save it to your computer.
Open attachments on a mobile device
Open encrypted attachments on mobile devices. The steps vary depending on your device and how the message is delivered. The message body and attachments may be included in a single encrypted PDF or encrypted separately.
Select your device to view the steps.
iPhones and iPads
To open attachments using Adobe Acrobat on iPhones and iPads, do as follows:
- From your inbox, open the encrypted PDF message.

If the message body and attachments are placed inside an encrypted PDF document, tap the encrypted PDF to open it. Do as follows:
- Tap the Share icon
in the top-right corner of the application, then tap Share File via.... A list of apps that support viewing the encrypted PDF opens. - Tap the Adobe Acrobat Reader icon
(Copy to Acrobat). Adobe Acrobat opens and prompts for a password. - Enter the password. The encrypted PDF opens.
- Tap the Menu icon
in the top-right corner of the application to open the menu. - Tap Attachments. A list of attachments appears.
- Tap an attachment to open it.
- Tap the Share icon

If the message body and attachments are encrypted separately, repeat these steps for each attachment.
Android devices (Mobile, tablet)
To open attachments using Adobe Acrobat on Android devices, do as follows:
- From your inbox, open the encrypted PDF message.

If the message body and attachments are inside an encrypted PDF document, do as follows:
- Save the encrypted PDF to your device.
- Open the encrypted PDF in Adobe Acrobat. A password prompt appears.
- Enter the password. The encrypted PDF opens.

Tap the menu icon.
- On mobile, tap the Settings icon
in the top-right corner. - On tablet, tap the Menu icon
to open the menu on the left side.
- On mobile, tap the Settings icon

Tap Attachments. A list of attachments appears.
- Tap an attachment to open it.

If the message body and attachments are encrypted separately, do as follows:
- Open the encrypted body of the email.
- Save the attachments to your device.
- Open each attachment and enter the password.
Open encrypted ZIP attachments
We recommend using 7-Zip or WinZip to open encrypted ZIP attachments. The attachment's name might be [ENCRYPTED] attachments.zip.
Note
Built-in ZIP tools (for example, Windows Explorer) can open the ZIP file, but can't extract the encrypted contents. Install 7-Zip or WinZip to extract them.
To open an encrypted ZIP file, do as follows:
- Download the ZIP file attached to your email.
- Open the ZIP file and select the file you want to extract.
- Enter your password.
Note
You only need to enter the password once to open any attachments in the ZIP file.
