Scan the computer

You can scan the computer for threats. There are two types of scan:

  • Quick scan
  • Full scan

Quick scan

A quick scan gives you rapid results.

The scan checks the following areas of the computer:

  • Memory.
  • The Master Boot Record (MBR).
  • Running processes, the associated applications, and the DLLs loaded into those processes.
  • Files that will run the next time the computer starts.

To run a quick scan, do as follows:

  1. Go to the Status page or the Detections page.
  2. Click Scan and select Quick scan.

When the scan is complete, you'll see a summary of the scan results.

  3. If threats are detected, go to the Events page to see details.

Note

You can't run a quick scan from Sophos Central. Clicking Scan now on a computer's details page in Sophos Central runs a full scan.

Turning on scheduled scanning in a Sophos Central policy also runs full scans.

Full scan

A full scan scans all files and folders on the computer. It includes memory and the Master Boot Record (MBR).

A full scan can take much longer to complete than a quick scan.

To run a full scan, do as follows:

  1. Go to the Status page or the Detections page.
  2. Click Scan and select Full scan.

When the scan is complete, you'll see a summary of the scan results.

  3. If threats are detected, go to the Events page to see details.

Note

Clicking Scan now on a computer's details page in Sophos Central runs a full scan. Turning on scheduled scanning also runs full scans.
