Application list

The application list contains many commonly used applications.

To filter applications, click Filter Filter button. next to the filter type. For all filter types, excluding Name, choose an option from the drop-down menu.

For Name, type the name of the application and choose an option from the drop-down menu. The options are as follows:

  • contains
  • is
  • is not
  • does not contain

New applications

New applications are automatically added to application filter policies and firewall rules when the application signature database is updated.

For example, if a new signature is added for a high-risk application, and a firewall rule has an application filter policy that blocks all high-risk applications, the application is blocked based on the new signature.

Application categories

Name Description
File transfer File transfer and uploads.
Gaming Games and contests.
General internet Apps, such as news, entertainment, financial, official sports websites, writing and grammar sites, libraries, design, workspaces, storage, search, browsers and extensions, speed tests, and shopping.
Instant messenger Messaging and chat rooms.
Infrastructure Network protocols, such as DNS, DHCP, FTP requests, SMTP, Citrix, MySQL, NetBIOS, QUIC, and TLS traffic over non-SSL/TLS ports.
Network services Protocols, such as routing, boot protocols, QoS, telecom and communications, network access, DHCP failover, signal processing and enhancement, and FTPS.
P2P Peer-to-peer file sharing apps.
Proxy and tunnel Proxy and VPN apps and services.
Remote access Remote access and remote desktop apps.
Streaming media Audio and video streaming, live streaming, and broadcast apps.
VoIP Voice over IP.
Mobile applications Apps, such as news, chat, entertainment, sports, e-commerce, social media, mail, gaming, and others available on operating systems, such as Android, Apple, and Blackberry.
Software update Updates to systems and applications, such as operating systems, chat, audio, security, browsers, office apps, antivirus, webcam, and streaming software.
Download applications File transfer, file sharing, storage, and download accelerator tools.
General business Business apps, such as cloud computing, hosting and collaboration, digital workspaces, storage, backup and restore, and accounting.
Web mail Web mail apps.
Conferencing Virtual meeting and conferencing.
Social networking General and focused social networking apps.
Storage and backup File storage with sharing and collaboration, and password storage.
Desktop mail Desktop email application.
Industrial control system Building, transmission protocols for telecontrol equipment, communication protocols between devices connected across buses and networks, or between components in process automation systems.
E-commerce E-commerce applications and services.
SyncAppCtl discovered Applications discovered on endpoints through Synchronized Application Control (SAC) that are unrecognized by the firewall. See Synchronized Application Control.
Sophos applications Sophos applications discovered on endpoints by SAC and mapped to this category.
System applications System applications for services, such as Windows and Linux, discovered on endpoints by SAC and mapped to this category.
Generative AI Artificial intelligence apps and services.
