VMware

You can deploy the Sophos Firewall virtual appliance in a VMware ESX or VMware ESXi environment.

Requirements

Check the vendor documentation to make sure you deploy your virtual firewall using a current, supported platform, operating system, and management tool.

The requirements are as follows:

  • You must have VMware ESXi installed on a server that meets the minimum hardware requirements below.
  • You must have vSphere Client (VMware management software) installed on a management device with network access to the server.

For instructions, go to the vSphere installation and setup guide.

System requirements

Sophos Firewall goes into fail-safe mode if you don't meet the minimum requirements.

The system requirements are as follows:

Hardware Specification
vCPU 1
vRAM 4 GB minimum
vNIC 2
Primary disk 16 GB minimum
Report disk 80 GB minimum

Licensing and resources

Configure the vCPU and vRAM based on the purchased license. Don't exceed the maximum number of vCPUs and vRAM specified in the license.

When you increase the vCPU and vRAM for virtual appliances, we recommend also increasing the size of the report disk to support additional log entries.

Backup and restore

We don't support firewall backups created using a virtual platform vendor's backup tools. See Backup and restore cloud and virtual firewalls.
