Configure mDNS reflector

You can configure mDNS reflector to allow service discovery across VLANs and networks.

Requirements

The following requirements must be met:

  • Configure the interfaces that participate in mDNS service discovery.
  • Configure firewall rules to allow application traffic associated with the discovered services. mDNS reflector only reflects service discovery traffic and doesn't allow application traffic.
  • Identify the service categories that should be available across network segments.

Configure mDNS reflector

Configure mDNS reflector as follows:

  1. Go to Network > mDNS.
  2. Turn on mDNS reflector.

    Default: Off

  3. Select the required IP version:

    • IPv4: Reflect IPv4 mDNS traffic only.
    • IPv6: Reflect IPv6 mDNS traffic only.
    • Dual: Reflect both IPv4 and IPv6 mDNS traffic.
  4. For Allowed interfaces, select the interfaces that should participate in service discovery. Only selected interfaces participate in reflected mDNS queries and advertisements.

    Maximum supported interfaces: 16

    Note

mDNS is available only on internal network interfaces. WAN and VPN interfaces aren't supported because mDNS traffic isn't routed beyond the internal network segments.

  5. For Services, select the service categories to reflect between selected interfaces:

    • Any

      Warning

When you select Any, the firewall processes all mDNS service categories, including unlisted categories. This might generate additional network traffic and reduce system performance.

    • AirDrop

    • AirPlay
    • Apple File Share
    • Chromecast
    • IoT Smart Home
    • Printer
    • Remote Desktop
    • Scanner
    • Sonos
    • Spotify Connect

The firewall reflects only the selected service categories.

  6. Click Apply.

The firewall immediately reflects supported mDNS discovery traffic between the selected interfaces.

Note

mDNS reflector doesn't automatically allow application traffic. Make sure that firewall rules allow traffic between the participating networks for the required services.
