How to reset Sophos UTM on AWS to factory settings

Learn how to perform a factory reset using the command-line and the WebAdmin.

Factory reset details

The factory reset function resets Sophos UTM on AWS back to the default configuration. It deletes the following data:

  • System configuration

  • Web filter cache

  • Logs and reporting data

  • Databases

  • Update packages

  • Licenses

  • Certificates

  • Passwords

  • High availability status

The Sophos UTM on AWS version number remains the same and all firmware and pattern updates that were installed are retained.

Note: Sophos UTM on AWS will shut down once a factory reset has been initiated.

Reset a Sophos hardware appliance

Most Sophos appliances have a reset button and will perform a factory reset when you click the button.

On some models, you find the reset button recessed in a hole in the case. Use a thin tool such as a ballpoint pen to press that button.

The models SG2xx and later let you perform a factory reset using the integrated menu of the device.

Reset using the command-line

To reset Sophos UTM on AWS using the command-line, do as follows:

  1. Sign in to the Sophos UTM on AWS console or SSH as loginuser.

  2. Enter this command to sign in as root:

    su -
  3. Change to the cc environment:

    cc
  4. Enter the following sequence of commands:

    RAW
    system_factory_reset

    The factory reset starts. Sophos UTM on AWS automatically shuts down when the factory reset is complete. You must power on Sophos UTM on AWS manually afterwards.

Note: You can also perform steps three to four using the cc system_factory_reset command.

Reset using WebAdmin

To reset Sophos UTM on AWS using the graphical user interface WebAdmin, do as follows:

  1. Sign in to WebAdmin.

  2. Go to Management > System Settings > Reset Configurations or Passwords and then click Run factory reset now.

    The factory reset starts. Sophos UTM on AWS automatically shuts down when the factory reset is complete. You must power it on manually afterwards.
