Update Sophos Mobile apps

The Sophos Mobile apps on all devices must be up to date before you can migrate the devices to Sophos Central.

The Sophos Mobile apps on Android devices, iPhones, and iPads are:

  • Sophos Mobile Control
  • Sophos Intercept X for Mobile
  • Sophos Secure Workspace
  • Sophos Secure Email

The Sophos Mobile app (or extension) on Chrome devices is Sophos Chrome Security.

When you have devices with out-of-date Sophos Mobile apps, the migration assistant tells you about it on the Preview export page under Devices. There are separate notifications per device platform and for the Sophos container.

Notifications about out-of-date apps.

We recommend you use the following phased approach to update the apps:

Ask users to update

To send your users a message asking them to update the Sophos Mobile apps, do the following:

  1. Go to Preview export in the migration assistant and click the link in the notification about out-of-date apps.

Link in the notification to open list of devices.

The Devices page opens, showing a list of affected devices.

  2. Select all devices in the list.

  3. Click Actions > Send message.
  4. Send a message to your users, asking them to update the Sophos Mobile apps on their device.

On iPhones and iPads, users must open Sophos Mobile Control and synchronize it after they’ve updated the apps.

Repeat this procedure for all notifications about out-of-date apps in the migration assistant.

You can track the progress on the migration assistant’s Preview export page. The migration assistant updates the numbers in the notifications every time a device syncs with the Sophos Mobile server.

Update apps remotely

If users didn’t update the Sophos Mobile apps on their devices, update them remotely. We suggest that you inform the users about this action.

To update the Sophos Mobile apps remotely, do as follows:

  1. If you haven’t done so already, upload the Sophos Mobile apps to your Sophos Mobile server, or create links to Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iOS).

    See Add app.

  2. Go to Preview export in the migration assistant and click the link in the notification to open the list of affected devices.

  3. Select all devices in the list.
  4. Click Actions > Install app.
  5. Complete the steps in the Install app assistant to update the app.
  6. In the device list, click Actions > Install app again to update all Sophos Mobile apps.

Repeat this procedure for all notifications about out-of-date apps in the migration assistant.

Delete inactive devices

There might be devices that don’t sync with the Sophos Mobile server, for example, because they’re not used anymore and are permanently turned off.

If you can’t contact the users and ask them to either update the apps or unenroll the devices, you must delete the devices from Sophos Mobile before you can migrate. If required, you can enroll the devices in Sophos Central after the migration.

To delete inactive devices, do as follows:

  1. Go to Preview export in the migration assistant and click the link in the notification to open the list of affected devices.
  2. Select all devices in the list.
  3. Click Actions > Delete.

Repeat this procedure for all notifications about out-of-date apps in the migration assistant.
